Anti-fog film: Clear visibility and reliable protection for food packaging

Antifogfilms for the food industry

What does "antifog" mean in the context of packaging films?

The term “antifog”—the English equivalent of “antibeschlag”—refers to a specific property of packaging films. Antifog additives prevent or reduce fogging on the inside of the film. This is particularly important for food packaging:

When packaged foods such as fruits, vegetables, or refrigerated products are exposed to a warmer environment, moisture can condense on the inside of the film. This fogging obscures the view of the packaged product, thereby reducing its appeal and product presentation at the point of sale. Antifogfilms s contain special coatings or materials that reduce the formation of condensation, ensuring a clear view of the packaged food even when temperatures fluctuate.

Why Antifog Packaging Film Is the Right Choice

Antifogfilms offer much more than just fog-free packaging. They combine product protection, sales-promoting presentation, and sustainability in a single solution—making them virtually unbeatable for food packaging.

Thanks to its high transparency and brilliance, the appearance of the packaged product remains visible and appetizing at all times. This is particularly important in retail: whether on the refrigerated shelf, at the fresh food counter, or in the frozen food section—the consumer can see at a glance what they are buying. The clear view, even despite temperature fluctuations—such as during transport from the cold storage facility to the sales counter—is a decisive factor in the purchasing decision.

At the same time, anti-fogfilms reliably protect the product from external factors such as moisture and oxygen. The packaging’s high puncture resistance and mechanical strength ensure that it remains intact even during transport and handling. This extends the shelf life of the packaged goods, resulting in less waste and higher customer satisfaction.

The anti-fogfilms in our product line are 100% food-safe and recyclable—an important and forward-looking contribution to environmental protection. The films can be returned to the recycling cycle, which increases the amount of recyclable material and reduces resource consumption. They are available in various thicknesses, in both half-tube and flat-film formats, and can be printed in multiple colors.

Depending on your packaging needs, we offer two different types of film with anti-fog properties: the BF-AF polyolefin fine-shrink film and the PPVAF BOPP film.

BF-AF – the polyolefin (POF) anti-fog shrink film

Anyone who wants not only to protect fresh products but also to showcase them in the best possible light will benefit from BF-AF polyolefin anti-fog shrink film. Thanks to its shrink properties, the film fits snugly and wrinkle-free around the product—regardless of its shape or size. The result is professional, crisp-contoured packaging that keeps food looking fresh and appetizing.

This cross-linked, electronically bonded multilayer film offers extremely high seal strength and excellent sealing properties. This allows it to be processed on high-speed packaging machines with high cycle rates—a clear advantage for businesses with high packaging volumes. The film is available in thicknesses of 11, 15, and 19 mµ and is 100% recyclable in the LDPE04 stream.

PPVAF – the anti-fog BOPP film made of polypropylene

For applications where shrinkability is not required, PPVAF is the ideal alternative. This biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film offers reliable product protection thanks to its high stability, excellent tear resistance, and very high impact resistance. Because it can be sealed on both sides, the film can be flexibly processed on wrapping machines, flow-pack machines, and seal-seam machines.

PPVAF is also particularly versatile in terms of its design: It is available in non-needled, hot-needled, or various perforated versions—depending on the product’s ventilation and breathability requirements. Available in thicknesses of 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 mµ, it is recyclable as a single material and can be printed with up to 8 colors using flexographic printing.

Application: Anti-fog film for food packaging

Antifogfilms are ideal for any situation where fresh products need to be both protected and displayed in a way that promotes sales. The range of applications in the food industry is extensive.

In the produce section, anti-fogfilms ensure that apples, berries, lettuce, and bell peppers remain clearly visible even after being moved from cold storage—without the typical fogging that obscures the product view in conventional films . This is a decisive sales advantage, especially for pre-packaged goods in self-service areas.

For meat, poultry, fish, and sausage products, protection against moisture and oxygen is particularly important in addition to the anti-fog property. The packaging extends the shelf life while keeping the product visually appealing—an important factor at the fresh food counter and in self-service refrigerated aisles. Cheese products also benefit from fog-free packaging, as the color and surface texture of the cheese remain clearly visible to customers at all times.

In the bread and baked goods sector, the PPVAF can be optimally tailored to meet ventilation and freshness-preservation requirements thanks to its perforations. This keeps the crust crispy while the packaging protects the product from drying out.

Frozen and chilled food products, as well as deli and high-convenience items such as fresh pizza or ready-to-eat meals, place particularly high demands on packaging: Significant temperature fluctuations between production, storage, and the sales counter quickly lead to heavy fogging on conventional films . Antifogfilms remain clear even under these conditions and enable an appealing presentation—whether as single-item or multi-item packaging.
