Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) is not just a buzzword. It consists of binding guidelines for the production environment, material control, hygiene, and quality management.

Schlichter manufactures in compliance with these standards—to ensure the highest level of product safety.

Polyolefin shrink films for the pharmaceutical industry

Polyolefin shrink films are the standard in pharmaceutical packaging. And for good reason:

  • High transparency for optimal product labeling
  • Excellent mechanical strength
  • Chemical resistance
  • Suitable for various sterilization methods

Important: Unlikefilms ,films films films plasticizers or chlorine-containing components. Highest purity guaranteed.

FDA-compliant, EU-compliant, done.

Uniform shrinkage through electronic cross-linking: When exposed to radiation, polyolefin fine-shrink films achieve uniform shrinkage properties in all directions. The result: wrinkle-free packaging, even for complex shapes such as blister packs or medical devices.

Protective functions of pharmaceutical films

The choice of materials depends on the product: active ingredient stability, dosage form, storage conditions, and shelf life.

Humidity, Light, and Environmental Factors

Many active ingredients are sensitive to moisture or UV radiation.films different barrier properties depending on the requirements:

Moisture protection: Water vapor permeability can be controlled by adjusting the material thickness and film structure. For hygroscopic active ingredients, films low permeability are available.

Light protection: UV-sensitive substances? Additives in the film block the radiation. Alternative: transparent films opaque secondary packaging.

Oxygen barrier: Products sensitive to oxidation require films low oxygen permeability. Multilayer structures or special coatings enhance the barrier.

Thermal stability: Our pharmaceutical films withstand storage, transport, and climatic fluctuations—without any loss of quality.

Serialization & Anti-Counterfeiting

The EU Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD) requires unique identification and tamper-evidence features. Pharmaceutical films play a central role in this regard:

Printability: Suitable for direct thermal and thermal transfer printing. Data Matrix codes, serial numbers, batch codes—precise and durable.

Tamper-evident features: Special films visible signs of tampering when opened. Authenticity guaranteed; unauthorized access prevented.

Track & Trace: Integration into serialized supply chains enables end-to-end traceability from the manufacturer to the patient. Compatible with common serialization systems.

Our pharmaceutical films are packaged in sterile packaging films the pharmaceutical industry

A wide range of materials to meet various needs

Different types of film are used depending on the application. The choice depends on the specific properties of the product.

Blister film & aluminum foil

Blister packs are the most common form of packaging for tablets and capsules. They consist of a sealing film and a transparent cover film.

Aluminum foil as a sealing film:

  • Excellent barrier against moisture, oxygen, and light
  • Waterproof, tear-resistant, chemically inert
  • Typically laminated with PP or other plastics
  • Thickness: 20–45 μm, depending on the level of protection required

Push-through blister: Aluminum foil laminated with paper on the back—for better printability. The paper features product information, lot numbers, and other details.

Blister film as a top layer: Usually transparent PVC or PVC coated with PVDC. Allows for visual inspection of the tablets while providing protection.

Diagnostics

Test kits, reagents, laboratory supplies – protection against moisture and contamination is essential.

Sealed shrink wrap or pouches ensure that the product remains functional throughout its shelf life.

Medical devices

Disposable instruments, catheters, dressing supplies, implants—all sterile-packed.

Our films validated for various sterilization methods and enable aseptic withdrawal.

Tablets & Capsules

Blister packs for oral dosage forms usefilms the transparent cover film.

Adequate barrier properties while ensuring that the product information remains legible.

Powders & APIs

Highly potent substances and active pharmaceutical ingredients in powder form require multiple layers of packaging.

Shrink wrap is used as secondary packaging and tamper-evident protection for primary containers.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Pharmaceutical Films

What does "GMP-compliant" mean when it comes to packaging films?

GMP stands for Good Manufacturing Practice—mandatory production standards for the pharmaceutical industry. GMP-compliant films manufactured under controlled conditions, with documented quality assurance, hygienic production environments, and complete traceability of every batch.

Which films for sterile medical devices?

Polyolefin shrink films are the standard for sterile medical devices. They maintain their integrity during all common sterilization processes (gamma radiation, ethylene oxide, steam) and provide a reliable sterile barrier until use.

What is the difference between PVC andfilms?

films no plasticizers or chlorinated components—unlike PVC. This makes them the preferred choice for applications with the highest purity requirements. Both are FDA-compliant, but polyolefin has the edge in terms of chemical resistance and environmental compatibility.

How do pharmaceutical films protect films moisture?

Water vapor permeability can be controlled by adjusting the material thickness and film structure. For moisture-sensitive active ingredients, films low permeability or multilayer structures are used. Aluminum foil provides the highest moisture barrier.

Are the films suitable films serialization and track-and-trace?

Yes. Our pharmaceutical films are suitable for direct thermal and thermal transfer printing. Data Matrix codes, serial numbers, and lot numbers can be applied with precision. The films compatible with standard serialization systems to ensure complete traceability.

What certifications does Schlichter-Pharmafolien hold?

Our pharmaceutical packaging films comply with FDA guidelines and EU regulations. They are manufactured under GMP conditions and are certified for direct contact with pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

Can custom film solutions be developed?

Yes. We develop custom films specific requirements—from barrier properties and sterilization processes to sustainability goals. We support the project every step of the way, from consultation and production to implementation.
