Microperforated film – tiny holes with a big impact

April 30, 2026

Good to know: Micro-perforated films

In microperforated film, the holes are so small that they are sometimes difficult to see with the naked eye. The perforations, which measure only a few hundred micrometers (µm), have many beneficial effects on the packaged product. This is because these tiny holes are just large enough to allow gases to pass through, yet small enough to prevent the entry of dirt or moisture.

The holes can be evenly distributed across the entire film or arranged in specific patterns, depending on the customer’s requirements and needs. The density and pattern of the microperforation used have a direct impact on the properties of the product packaging. Microperforation can be applied to various film materials, including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and other plastic films used in the packaging industry. Upon request, we offer perforation services for our entire range of films.

Generally speaking, perforation is used when a controlled atmosphere is important for extending shelf life and preserving the quality of sensitive products. These are often food products such as bread, vegetables, fruit, sausage, and cheese. However, this type of perforation is also found in the cosmetics industry and in the production of medical products.

Advantages of Microperforation

Micro-perforated film offers a wide range of benefits. As with macro-perforation, the holes allow for gas exchange and promote proper air circulation. Excess moisture and condensation can be minimized. Thanks to these optimized conditions, products stay fresh longer—during transport, at retail, and with the end consumer. Because the holes are so small, flavors are also preserved. This is particularly important for products such as cheese, sausage, and many others.

To create the desired storage and packaging conditions, the density and pattern of the microperforations can be adapted to the specific requirements of the packaged product. By using microperforations, the packaging can be optimally tailored to the product’s needs and the shipping and storage conditions, thereby ensuring the best possible shelf life and quality for as long as possible.

Microperforation in Food Products

Applications of microperforated films

Microperforation is a versatile technology and is frequently used in the following industries:

  • Food industry: Especially for packaging fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, cheese, and other perishable goods.
  • Pharmaceutical Industry: For packaging medications that require a specific level of humidity or ventilation.
  • Cosmetics Industry: For packaging products that require specific breathability.

Micro-perforated film optimally enhances breathability and moisture regulation while providing high transparency and an appealing, sales-promoting appearance. This ensures extended shelf life combined with excellent processing characteristics. With our own extensive manufacturing center , we offer you the right perforation for films from our extensive film assortment . We’d be happy to advise you. Write to us or give us a call.
